Grapevine: Wine and cheese pairing this weekend at Jamesport Vineyards

By Samantha Brix On November 30, 2011 · In Featured

Some say Wine Country is quiet in the winter months, but lately it seems like there are an endless number of events. There are wine tastings, wine and chocolate pairings, gatherings at local restaurants over good wine and good food (like the Tuesday night dinners called The Wine Project at The Riverhead Project in downtown Riverhead) [...]

Shroom hunter hits the mother lode in Riverhead, Cutchogue

By Samantha Brix On November 29, 2011 · In Featured

Arie Pavlou said he looks just like Little Red Riding Hood when he goes mushroom hunting in the woods of the North Fork. He’ll wear a big jacket and carry a woven basket with the top open so his captured mushrooms are exposed to air. He does differ from the fairytale character in at least [...]

Pindar Vineyards begins installation of biggest turbine in town

By Beth Young On November 29, 2011 · In Events, Featured, Wine

This week Pindar Vineyards in Peconic will put up the biggest wind turbine in Southold Town. Alex Damianos, who spearheaded the project at his family’s vineyard, estimates that the $550,000 turbine will supply at least 90 percent of the vineyard’s energy, which currently costs, on average, $60,000 per year. The 100 kilowatt turbine, manufactured by [...]

North Fork Chef: Your own pasta is well worth the effort

By John Ross On November 29, 2011 · In Featured

“It was always linguine between us … it was never spaghetti between us, not cappellini, nor farfalle, vermicelli, pappardelle, fettuccine, perciatelli, or even tagliarini. Linguine was stabbed, pitched, and twirled on forks, spun round and round on silver spoons. Long, smooth, and always al dente. In dark trattorias, we broke crusty panera, toasted each other [...]

With Thanksgiving behind us, focus shifts to holiday wines

By Samantha Brix On November 28, 2011 · In Events, Featured, Food, Wine

The end of Thanksgiving means the start of the holiday gift-buying frenzy. Some of my relatives headed to the (ridiculously long) lines at Best Buy just a few hours after eating our apple pie and pumpkin bread pudding. There’s barely time for a breath in between the big winter holidays. I was still thinking about [...]

By Carolyn Iannone On November 28, 2011 · In Featured, Wine

Just a swirl of McCall’s 2007 pinot noir hitting your nose is proof Russ McCall has more of one special thing than the rest of us: patience. Mr. McCall planted the first vines on his Cutchogue farm more than 14 years ago. But it was only in 2007 that he labeled his first bottle of [...]

Baker’s Workshop makes last-minute adjustment for holiday pies

By Samantha Brix On November 22, 2011 · In Featured, Food

A spate of customers stopped at the The Baker’s Workshop in Riverhead last week seeking sweets to serve at their Thanksgiving dinners. There were plenty of treats — cookies, pastries, cupcakes and more — but no pies. The Baker’s Workshop is owned by Suffolk County Community College and run almost entirely by its culinary arts [...]

Winery Profiles: Roanoke Vineyards

By Samantha Brix On November 22, 2011 · In Featured, Wine

Richard Pisacano started working at Mudd Vineyards, a vineyard development and consulting firm in Southold, in the late 1970’s when he was a high school student. He learned how to graft grapevines and started his own vineyard on Herricks Lane in Jamesport a few years later. Planting Chardonnay and Merlot grapes, he called the land [...]

Winery ‘Pour People’ host their first awards night

By Carolyn Iannone On November 21, 2011 · In Events, Featured, Food, Wine

The men and women pouring wine along the wine trail are often the biggest promoters of wine clubs and winemakers. But they are not the ones getting rich off a vineyard’s success. When it comes time for all the awards showered on the vineyard, it’s often the owners and winemakers that get all the glory. [...]
